Matt Davis’ Aerial Photograph @ Tritone

Thursday, January 22, 2009, 8:30-10:30pm
Tritone, 1508 South Street, Philadelphia
$10 They’ll buy you a ticket and a drink if you RSVP soon!
Matt Davis’ eleven-piece ensemble fills Tritone’s intimate space with their distinctive amalgamation of jazz, classical, various world traditions, and popular music. The group’s instrumentation started as a traditional string quartet with guitar, bass, and drums, but has grown to include clarinet, tenor and soprano saxophones, trombone, flugelhorn and computer generated sounds. “Davis’ warm, dolorous melodies and unexpected rhythmic effects have a way of seizing attention,” wrote David Adler in thePhiladelphia Weekly before going on to comment on the band’s “pooled virtuosity.”

Davis, a guitarist in the Big Ears project, will stay after the show to speak with guests. Four other Big Ears artists are in Davis’ ensemble and will also be on hand: Bryan Rogers (tenor sax), Brent White (trombone), Bart Miltenberger (trumpet), Aino Soderheilm (clarinet).

This one-of-a-kind Philadelphia-based chamber-jazz trio features Big Ears trumpeter Bart Miltenberger and guitarist Matt Davis. The Philadelphia Inquirer described the group as “striking and unusual” for their adventurous compositions with influences ranging across jazz, blues, folk, and rock. At the Art Alliance, they will perform the Western Suite of Jimmy Giuffre, the iconoclastic jazz saxaphonist, clarinetist, and composer.

After the performance, you are invited for a free drink and conversation with trumpeter Bart Miltenberger at the upstairs bar of Plays and Players Theater, around the corner at 1714 Delancey Street.

Performance presented by Ars Nova Workshop - www.arsnovaworkshop.com
