American INSIGHT’s first annual Free Speech Film Festival’s Free Speech Awards will take place on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, in the Benjamin Franklin Hall of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, PA. Creative filmmakers from 16 nations around the world entered their work as a response to the subject of Free Speech. The Festival has been created and developed over a period of six years by founder and chairman, Margaret Chew Barringer. The Festival takes a close look at the topics of Free Speech and in 2012 include censorship, resistance, inequality, courage, change, and hope.

Ryan Wilson Kelly: The Sleep of Reason
The Sleep of Reason is a new performance installation by Ryan Wilson Kelly, developed specifically for Napoleon Gallery. Inspired by the life and death of noted Philadelphian paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope, the work explores themes of solitude, intellectual endeavor, and the tension between achievement and failure inherent in the creative process.
You Sick Little Baby
You sick little baby is gonna slip you under the coffee table, squeeze you in nice and small, make sure you fit and get nice and comfy in there. It’s gonna close you in, box you up, and keep you there for a minute so you can see. We love you. We are showing old, new, and unfolding performances, a series of placements, situations, and dance steeped in friendship and collaboration.
Zoodada poetry night at the Random tea Room
This Friday, April 27th from 8-10pm Zoodada comes home to the Random Tea Room for an intimate evening of poetry and music.
Featured musician this month is Christopher Strawley who will be exposing us to some of his experimental piano finger flighted fancies. Christopher Strawley is a songwriter and composer whose songs tell stories which draw from tragedies and life experiences to paint a picture of hope for the listener.
Featured poet this month will be Kitakiya Dennis. Kitakiya is based in West Philly and describes herself as a full time artist, spiritual counselor and poet. Check out her website on facebook here. Her work is inspired by the reconnection to my Indian and African cultural traditions of adorning the body & honoring the soul and has been featured has been featured in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago and Berlin(Germany). We share with her the goal of promoting cultural exchange and holistic living through the lens of art and personal development.
THE ROOTS MURAL PROJECT EXHIBITION WITH TATYANA FAZLALIZADEH
The Roots Mural Project continues to move forward with exciting design concepts, a talented group of artists (Amber Collective featuring Tatyana Fazlalizadeh), innovative art education curriculum, and public programming.
Mural Arts invites the public to participate in the making of this large-scale mural by visiting our new studio space at 327 South Street, where exhibitions, demonstrations, painting activities, and other events will be held throughout the year, beginning on Friday, April 27 with an exhibition by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, one of the muralists.
Miller Rothlein Hosts 5th Anniversary of Cinco De MIRO
For the fifth consecutive year, Miller Rothlein will turn a group of regular area residents into dance superstars, giving them one night in the spotlight and all the glittery ballroom glory they can take in. This isn’t reality television and there are no celebrities. At Cinco de MIRO: Mambo Mio, seven people who always wanted to dance and have not had the chance to dance professionally, will have a moment in the sun. They will perform a Latin inspired ballroom dance with a professional dancer and compete for prizes and bragging rights. Cinco de MIRO: Mambo Miowill be held Saturday, May 5th at the Latvian Society from 6:30 p.m.-11 p.m. Tickets cost $25 on-line, and $30 at the door.
